The Borough Shade Tree Commission will soon be posting signs to celebrate the membership as a Tree City USA town and to show the commitment to a healthy tree canopy that enhances businesses and the environment.
The Tree City USA program has been greening up cities and towns across America since 1976. It is a nationwide movement that provides the framework necessary for communities to manage and expand their public trees. More than 3,400 communities have made the commitment to becoming a Tree City USA. The application for New Hope Borough was recently approved to join these communities, passing the standards of commitment, including having the following:
- Tree Board or Commission
- Tree Ordinance
- Annual Budget of at least $2 per capita dedicated to tree programs
- Arbor Day Observance and Proclamation
The New Hope Borough Shade Tree Commission reviews the planting, removal, and maintenance of street trees located on public streets and highways of the Borough. The Commission reviews applications for the removal and maintenance of street trees to safeguard the continued value to the environment and social contributions gained when trees are well maintained.
The Shade Tree Commission is planning a celebration of Arbor Day on Friday, April 24, 2020, where a proclamation will be read, while planting a tree to celebrate the life and contributions of former STC Chair, Ronald Gering. Additional information regarding this celebration will be publicized in early April.
